Day 1, Sunday, April 21-Travel

Up at 0400, our Lyft ride came at 0445 and we were all checked in and waiting at the gate by 0530.

We were at our gate in plenty of time and about 20 mins before boarding they asked for 25 passengers to volunteer to check their carry on to their destination...we were first in line. But then they announced that we were delayed due to a mechanical issue.  Magically, a meal voucher showed up in my Delta app, but before we could use it they announced that they fixed the plane.  We took off for ATL a bit behind schedule.

It was looking like we had a tight connection in ATL, but we made it to our gate about 20mins before boarding.  We ordered lunch with our vouchers.  They were so slow we had to take it with us on the plane but we were wheels up on schedule and headed for the Caribbean.

We arrived on time and were met by the Jeep Rental company. I fetched the Jeep while June fetched our bags. We were hungry and went in search of food while we waited for Jean and Ed to arrive. It took June a few minutes to stop screaming every time we had a car coming at us because we are driving on the left in St. John.

We tried to get a chicken sandwich at KFC, but they don't sell sandwiches...really. The weather was iffy, low 80's with rain on and off.  We headed back to the airport, with June still not liking driving on the left.

Jean and Ed arrived on schedule and we set out for the St Thomas to St John car ferry in Red Hook. I was happy to have June get in the back seat. We had to wait about an hour for the 6:30PM ferry.  The ferry looks old and tired.

Cars have to be backed onto the ferry, the process of loading and unloading is rather chaotic. But we backed on and it was a smooth 25 min ride to St John for $65 round trip.

Once off the Ferry we stopped at the first grocery store for some provisions. Yikes, things are expensive, we got breakfast food, a six pack of beer, 2 bottles of spirits and the bill was $250.

We were met just short of our rental villa, Coral Haven, by our host, Alisha. We followed her up the mountain on a steep, switchback, washed out road to our villa, we were thankful we rented a Jeep.

It was almost 9PM by the time we got settled and fixed ourselves a drink...we are finally on 'Island Time'.

Monday we will connect with Paul and Lisa and start exploring St John.

Our villa has lots of suggestions.

  1. Planes, ferries, and jeeps. The villa is great, time to relax!

  2. We weren’t sure about the start of the day but all is well that ends well. The roads are terrifying. :(

  3. 4 wheel drive jeep is mandatory. Saying our road to the Villa is on a road that would be best described as an improved goat trail is probably a compliment. The girls like it a lot...not! Villa very nice with a great view of Coral Bay, so worth it.
